The War of the Worlds: Chapter 1

WHAT A BEGINNING! We're off to an awesome start with H.G. Wells planting a stellar curiosity for what's a'happenin' on Mars while "life as we know it" continues in an innocence (or is it ignorance?) of things to come.ย

What some of our members thought:

"I loved the sense of something imminently happening and yet, Wells ends the chapter with It seemed so safe and tranquil. Awesome setup."ย

"My parents lived through this time. They told the stories of how people believed this and the panic that the world was in."

"What impressed me was the year in which this was written!! I canโ€™t seem to get over that fact- that during the last days of the so-called โ€œWild Westโ€ there were brains thinking such higher thoughts at the same time! It really does boggle my mind."

"I am impressed with the use of language, the assumption that the reader could handle words of more than 2 syllables. This may be one of the best โ€˜set upโ€™ chapters Iโ€™ve ever read."

"Talk about putting things in perspective from the first page! Humans are still living with 'infinite complacency' today about so many things happening in the world."
