Connecting with the Passing Book Box

I'm so glad you got one of our limited edition book boxes featuring Nella Larsen's Passing because it was a real eye-opener for us inside our Monthly Book Box subscription and I am excited to share that experience with you here inside the Passing Book Box.

First things first, like I said in the note I wrote to you, Passing opened my eyes to a world that I did not know existed. Before reading Passing, I had never heard of prejudice within a race. Before reading Passing, I had never heard of the incredibly bold (and potentially dangerous) lifestyle. Before reading Passing, I didn't even know what I didn't know.

But Nella Larsen's classic changed all that for me.

And I hope it does for you, too.

Before you Begin

You are going to be tempted to read the introduction before you dive into Passing. I encourage you to skip it. It contains a good many spoilers to the novel.

Instead, to set the stage in your head, read what I shared on Passing's author here. Nella Larsen is featured near the end (#12 on my list of 13 Classic Female Authors You Should Read).

Save the book's Introduction to read after you finish the book.

Trust me.
